Obituary for Alvydas Vasaitis

Po trumpos ligos mirė 2019m. liepos 15d. apsuptas šeimos. Gimė Graz, Austrijoje 1945m. sausio 13d. Amerikoje įsigyjo kompiuterio analitiko specialybę ir matematikos bakalauro laipsnį Loyola University of Chicago. Buvo aktyvus Lietuvių Fondo ir Pasaulio Lietuvių Centro narys.

A. Vasaitis ilgus metus buvo Čikagos lietuvių operos meno vadovas ir dirigentas (1980 - 2006). Jo debiutas su Čikagos lietuvių opera įvyko 1974m. diriguojant Verdi operą "Un Ballo in Maschera" . Jis paruošė ir dirigavo virš dvylikos įvairių operų.

1985m. buvo pakviestas diriguoti Verdi "La Traviata" Lietuvos Nacionaliniame Operos ir Baleto Teatre. 1986m. dirigavo Chicago Chamber Orchestra koncertą kuriame skambėjo Lietuvos kompozitorių muzika atliekama Danos Stankaitytės (JAV), Virgilijaus Noreikos (LT), Nijolės Ambrazaitytės (LT), Algio Grigo (JAV).

Kaip pianistas, A. Vasaitis pasižymėjo savo subtilumu. Su lietuvių sopranu Dana Stankaityte - įrašas lietuvių kompozitorių dainų.

1988m. A. Vasaitis kviečiamas diriguoti Lietuvos Nacionalinės Filharmonijos orkestrui atliekant Brahms ir Jakubėno kūrinius. Tais pačiais metais diriguoja Verdi "Otello" LNOB Teatre, diriguoja Lietuvos Nacionalinės Filharmonijos Orkestrui, skamba Mozart ir Beethoven kūriniai. Tarp A. Vasaičio diriguotų įrašų - Philharmonica Hungarica (Vokietija), solistas Algis Grigas.

1991m. A. Vasaitis pagerbtas Amerikos Lietuvių Bendruomenės muzikos žymeniu.
2003m. Jo Ekselencija Lietuvos Respublikos Prezidentas Valdas Adamkus įteikia Komandoro Kryžių.

Nuliūdę liko: žmona Vitalija, sūnus Valdas su žmona Andrea, dukra Siga bei kiti giminės Lietuvoje.

Austrian born on January 13, 1945 of Lithuanian descent, Alvydas Vasaitis began his musical development in his early years. After receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Loyola University Chicago, Alvydas spent much of his time pursuing his true passion of music. Alvydas Vasaitis was the artistic director and principal conductor of the Lithuanian Opera Company of Chicago from 1980 to 2006. During his tenure he also conducted a symphony recording of opera choruses sung by the Lithuanian Opera of Chicago chorus.

As conductor, he made his debut with the Lithuanian Opera Company of Chicago in 1974 in Verdi’s opera Un Ballo in Maschera. Subsequent performances include works such as G.Donizetti L’Elisir d’amore, Lucia di Lammermoor, G.Verdi Nabucco, La Traviata, Otello, R.Leoncavallo I Pagliacci, C.Orff Carmina Burana, C..M. von Weber Der Freischutz, A.Ponchielli I Lituani, V.Bellini Norma, V.Klova Pilėnai, G.Bizet Les Pescheurs de Perles, Carmen, J.Strauss Der Zigeunerbaron, P. Mascagni Cavalleria Rusticana. In the early 1980's Alvydas Vasaitis prepared and conducted a special concert dedicated to the symphonic works for soloists, chorus, and orchestra of renowned Lithuanian composer Vladas Jakubėnas.

In 1985 Alvydas Vasaitis was the guest conductor at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius, Lithuania, for the highly successful performance of Verdi's La Traviata. In 1986 he conducted a concert of Lithuanian symphonic songs and music with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, featuring renowned Lithuanian and American singers Dana Stankaitis (USA), Virgilijus Noreika (LT), Nijolė Ambrazaitytė (LT), Algis Grigas (USA).

Alvydas Vasaitis was also an accomplished pianist and accompanist, known for his sensitive and musical pianistic style, and has performed in numerous concerts both in the USA and Europe. As pianist and accompanist Alvydas Vasaitis is featured in a recording of Lithuanian art songs performed by the renowned Lithuanian-American soprano Dana Stankaitis and was also the conductor in a recording of operatic arias by Dana Stankaitis.

In 1988, Alvydas Vasaitis was invited to be guest conductor of the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Orchestra in Vilnius, Lithuania, where he presented a concert of symphonic works by Jakubėnas and Brahms. The same year he was also guest conductor with the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre in Vilnius where he conducted Verdi‘s Otello. He has also conducted the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Orchestra in all Mozart and all Beethoven concerts.

Alvydas Vasaitis has conducted recordings with several orchestras including the renowned Philharmonia Hungarica located in Germany (baritone soloist Algis Grigas). In 1991 he was the recipient of the Recognition in Music Award presented by the Lithuanian–American Community.

In 2003 he was awarded the honorary designation of the Order of Merits to Lithuania, the Cross of Commander, personally presented by the president of the Republic of Lithuania, His Excellency Valdas Adamkus.

In addition to his numerous professional achievements Alvydas was a member of the Chicago Amateur Pianist Guild and
participated in the Chicago Amateur Piano Competition. In his spare time he enjoyed skeet shooting and spending time with family and friends.

Alvydas Vasaitis passed peacefully on July 15, 2019 after a short illness surrounded by family: wife Vitalija, son Valdas, daughter in-law Andrea, and daughter Siga.
